China

AHF China started its first program in Linfen in 2006. Since then, collaboration with different partners has been extended to 15 other provinces (autonomous districts and municipality cities), including Shanxi, Henan, Chongqing, Guangxi, Yunnan, Beijing, Shanghai, Hainan, Heilongjiang, Guangdong, Sichuan, Hunan, Zhejiang, Tianjin, and Liaoning. AHF CHina has been focusing on providing greater access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in China through three main ways: 1) training doctors and nurses in ART services, 2) providing complimentary medicine for opportunistic infections (OI) among low-income populations, and 3) forming community-based partnerships to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

In 2013, a new online “Easy Test” pilot self-testing program has been supported to provide timely and convenient testing access for men who have sex with men (MSM). The program has expanded and has covered 14 provinces in 2017. Working closely with national government and organizations, AHF China has supported the revision of the National Technical Protocol for HIV Testing in 2015. The revision has included the alternative confirmation strategy of three rapid tests for key populations especially among MSM and IDUs. AHF China also worked with the National Health and Family Planning Commission to produce the latest standards for ART free treatment.

In 2016, an estimated 880,000 Chinese are living with HIV, out of the 1.3 billion total population. Out of the 880,000 Chinese living with HIV, approximately 490,000 are on treatment.
