A local Malawi secondary school recently honored two Girls Act program members from the Khola Chapter for outstanding performance on their 2021 national academic examinations.

Ireen Kutsamba and Mercy Chigoli, along with two other students, received awards from Khola Community Day Secondary School—with Ms. Kutsamba getting additional honors as the highest scorer on the tests—a first-time accomplishment for any girl in the school’s history!

Both girls received assistance with school fees as part of the Girls Act program, which also supported 20 additional students, renovated the girls’ hostel, and hosted career guidance and mentorship sessions.

“Ireen and Mercy prove that girls can achieve anything they set their mind to when provided with the right support,” said Triza Hara, Country Program Manager for AHF Malawi. “The awards ceremony was a great way to honor students who have excelled on their tests. It’s also a way to motivate and encourage other girls at Khola CDSS by showing a shining example of what is possible with hard work and dedication.”

With secondary school in the rearview, Ms. Kutsamba plans to pursue a career in the medical field as a nurse.

“Challenges will be there, but always stick to what you want to achieve,” added Kutsamba. “When the nurse role model visited us, I realized that women can also achieve their goals despite the obstacles we face in rural areas.”
