Getting PrEP at AHF is simple and fast. If you don’t have health insurance or can't afford PrEP, we can help you qualify for patient assistance programs. AHF helps you with the entire PrEP process from start to finish.

1. Complete your initial consultation with an AHF team member.

2. Get your required PrEP Lab Testing done at an AHF Wellness Center.

3. Get your prescription from an AHF provider.

4. Fill your prescription at any AHF pharmacy.

What is PrEP?

PrEP is an excellent tool in preventing the spread of HIV, but there are some essential facts you’ll need to know to get started.

Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a daily pill.
PrEP is 99% effective at preventing HIV only when taken as prescribed.
PrEP is for HIV-negative people of any gender or sexual orientation who may be at risk of contracting HIV through sex or drug use.
PrEP does not protect against STDs and should be used with condoms.

While taking PrEP, you’ll have to visit your health care provider routinely as recommended for follow-up visits, HIV tests, and prescription refills. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV.

What is PrEP?

Taking PrEP

Truvada can be taken by adults and adolescents of all genders. Descovy is a newer medication that is safer for people who may have underlying kidney or bone problems. However, Descovy is only FDA-approved for cisgender males and transgender women. Descovy has not been studied for people assigned female at birth. Your AHF provider will talk further with you about these two types of PrEP pills. Not all health insurances cover Descovy. For gay and bisexual men, there is also the option of taking PrEP “On Demand” (also known as 2-1-1 PrEP), instead of daily. “On Demand/2-1-1” dosing means taking two PrEP pills 2-24 hours before having sex, one pill the day after you had sex and one more pill the day after that. Though studies have shown the 2-1-1 dosing to be effective, it is not an FDA-approved dosing regimen. In addition, the studies on 2-1-1 dosing were done with Truvada only (it has not been studied using Descovy). The decision to go on 2-1-1 dosing should be made only after consultation with your medical provider.

Is PrEP Safe?

PrEP side effects, such as headaches, upset stomach, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and fatigue, usually subside if taken with food and/or within the first month of use.

More serious side effects are rare. They can include reduced kidney function and bone density; however, they are usually mild and reversible. If you get on PrEP, your provider will monitor your kidney function regularly.
