AHF Mexico is the largest AHF program in Latin America and has focused on expanding Rapid Test Programs in the region. The program has administered more than 400,000 rapid tests since 2007, enabling more than 5,600 newly diagnosed HIV clients to know their status and access medical care. AHF Mexico has partnered with local organizations, NGOs, and local governments to expand its services across the country making better client retention possible. In 2013, AHF Mexico began operating its first mobile clinic, which provides clients with affordable care at their convenience. Also In 2013, the first wellness center was established in Mexico City. In 2016, the second wellness center was established in Cuernavaca, Morelos. Both centers provide HIV and STD testing and treatment services. AHF Mexico continues to develop programs advocating for improved quality of care, continued access to treatment, and advocates for affordable drug prices throughout the country.
Though HIV/AIDS cases are found throughout the country, the epidemic is concentrated among men who have sex with men, sex workers, and intravenous drug users. Approximately 90 percent of all HIV/AIDS infections are transmitted through sexual contact. The number of new infections has remained stable for the past decade, but an estimated 9,300 new cases occur each year. Mexico has a national policy on HIV/AIDS and has scaled up its efforts to provide access to testing and treatment. Yet, social stigma prevents many from accessing the necessary care and treatment.
