In News by AHF

Condom ad, appearing in several California publications this week, notes that when used consistently and correctly, condoms work 98% of the time; also that in L.A. County, a majority of adolescents use condoms, while the majority (64%) of young gay men also use condoms.

Awareness ad addresses myth of ‘condom fatigue’ concerning the use and availability of one of the safest, most effective—and inexpensive (often free)—tools for HIV, STD and pregnancy prevention.

LOS ANGELES (September 25, 2014) As an ongoing debate regarding the use of the AIDS treatment, Truvada, for use as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as a possible method of HIV prevention continues to play out nationwide, advocates from AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) have launched a new ‘Condom Facts’ ad campaign intended to remind the public of the critical role that the condom can play in HIV and STD prevention as well as prevention of unwanted pregnancies.

AHF’s ‘Condom Facts’ ad, which began appearing in several California publications this week, notes that when used consistently and correctly during any sexual encounter, condoms work 98% of the time as a barrier protection, and also that in L.A. County, a majority of adolescents use condoms, while the majority (64%) of young gay men also use condoms. The ad also cautions, However, condoms afford no protection if they’re not used.”

“We felt if important to create and run this condom awareness ad to remind the public about the crucial role that the humble, much maligned condom can play in prevention,” said Michael Weinstein, President of AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “This ad addresses the myth of ‘condom fatigue’ concerning the use and availability of what has consistently been one of the safest, most effective and inexpensive—and often free—tools for HIV and STD prevention.”

AHF’s ‘Condom Facts’ ad also notes: “Female sex workers in Nevada brothels are required to use condoms, resulting in zero cases of HIV transmission.4 That’s because condoms provide the best protection against STDs and HIV. Every time.”    [CITATION #4: Albert AE et al. (1995). Condom use among female commercial sex workers in Nevada’s legal brothels. AJPH, 85(11): 1514-1520].

AHF’s ‘Condom Facts’ ad campaign is running this week in the following publications: CALIFORNIA: Frontiers (9/24/14), Long Beach Press Telegram (9/21/14), LA Weekly (9/25/14), Los Angeles Daily News (9/21/14), Oakland Post (8/20/14), Beverly Press (9/25/14).

The ‘Condom Facts’ campaign will likely expand to other markets as AHF continues to ramp up its public awareness and advocacy campaign reminding readers of the efficacy of condoms when used consistently and correctly for possible prevention of HIV, STDs as well as possible unwanted pregnancies.
