Bills introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and Rep. Elijah Cummings would allow Medicare to negotiate prices for the drugs it purchases from pharmaceutical companies in the Medicare Part D Program.

WASHINGTON (BUSINESS WIRE) – AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) welcomes legislation Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) introduced in the United States Congress that will address the obscene cost of prescription drugs in the United States.

Their proposals, S. 2011 in the U.S. Senate and H.R. 4138 in the U.S. House of Representatives, would allow Medicare to negotiate prices for the drugs it purchases from pharmaceutical companies in the Medicare Part D Program. Right now, because of a sweetheart deal with drug companies when the program was originally signed into law, Medicare, the largest purchaser of prescription drugs is prohibited from getting the best deal on prices from drug manufacturers. The bills, called the ‘Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Acts of 2017,’ would provide for negotiation of lower covered part D drug prices on behalf of Medicare beneficiaries and the establishment and application of a formulary by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services under Medicare Part D.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the largest global AIDS organization, currently provides medical care and/or services to over 889,000 individuals in 39 countries worldwide in the US, Africa, Latin America/Caribbean, the Asia/Pacific Region and Eastern Europe.
