AHF Spices Up Prevention at Brazil & Mexico Prides

In Brazil, Global, Mexico by AHF

Sao Paulo and Mexico City Gay Pride parades are among the largest in the world. In fact, Sao Paulo holds the Guinness World Record for the largest parade ever and Mexico City’s event consistently attracts some of the largest crowds in Latin America.

With a strong presence in both countries, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) used the opportunity to support both events by promoting HIV prevention and offering free rapid HIV testing and condoms.

In Brazil, almost 900 people were tested for HIV and other STDs, 17 clients tested positive and were immediately linked to care, and 200,000 condoms were distributed.

“AHF was the only NGO [non-governmental organization] in the Gay Parade that brought prevention messages to the participants,” said AHF Brazil Prevention, Testing and Advocacy Manager Beto de Jesus. “In partnership with the STI, AIDS and Hepatitis Programs at the national, state and municipal levels, AHF distributed thousands of condoms – we’re reminding the LGBT scene that prevention is as important as ever.”

Additionally, AHF Mexico participated in Mexico City’s Gay Pride march in June. The team tested 749 people for HIV and identified 29 positive results. All positive clients were linked to care and follow-up services. AHF distributed 43,000 condoms during the Pride.

AHF and Impulse Mexico City partnered to bring entertainment to a popular public space where performers relayed the benefits of HIV prevention and condom use.

“About 90% of all new HIV infections in Mexico are transmitted through sexual contact,” said AHF Latin America Bureau Chief Dr. Patricia Campos. “Mexico City’s Pride week is an opportunity for us to promote HIV prevention in a creative way and reach thousands of people though education, testing and condom distribution.”

AHF has been active in Mexico since 2004 and in Brazil since 2013. There are currently 28,085 and 8,325 patients in care in Mexico and Brazil, respectively.
