AHF Cambodia and the Military on the Offensive against HIV

High-ranking officials from Cambodia’s government and military joined AHF Cambodia and other partner NGOs at the Phnom Penh Himavari Hotel on May 5 to officially mark the launch of the newest prevention initiative in the country – a mobile testing and treatment unit.

The unit, which was reconfigured into a mobile clinic from a passenger van, will provide testing and treatment services to members of the country’s defense forces and their families. The mobile unit will be dedicated to reaching those living in remote areas, primarily around Cambodia’s borders where access to these services is challenging.

Senior Minister and Chairman of the National AIDS Authority H.E Ieng Mouly presided over the meeting and delivered the opening remarks, expressing full support of the government for the program. AHF Asia Bureau Chief Dr. Chhim Sarath represented AHF leadership at the event.

“Our mobile van is effective at reaching those who are most at risk, and we can encourage more people to get tested when we bring the mobile unit to them,” Dr. Sarath said. “This program is a major contributor to the national strategy of HIV/AIDS prevention.”

AHF Cambodia provides HIV care and treatment to 32,867 patients and has been working in partnership with the country’s government since 2005. The national HIV prevalence rate has fallen from 1.7% in 1998 to 0.6% in 2015.
