Group to discuss Expanding Rent Control/Stabilization and Stopping Corporate Landlord Influence

NEW YORK (April 21, 2026) – New York marks the fourth city in a series of meetings and public events by the national coalition to advance rent control/stabilization and tenant rights. Organizational leaders from New York, Minnesota, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas, and Washington, D.C. will convene in Harlem to strategize on expanding and preserving rent-stabilized housing for low-income communities. Previous convenings were held in DC, Dallas, and Los Angeles.

Who: Stakeholders, tenant organizations, renters and elected officials from across the United States will convene in New York City to discuss strategies to advance rent control /stabilization nationwide; stop the influence of corporate landlords; delineate opportunities locally and nationally to promote rent stabilization; reverse statewide bans and partial bans on rent control; winning and defending rent control; empowering tenants and connecting homelessness, HUD subsidized tenant campaigns with the rent control movement.
Among the speakers and panelists participating at the conference include Michael Weinstein, President of AIDS Healthcare Foundation; Donald Whitehead, Executive Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless; Tyller Williamson, Mayor of Monterey, CA; Susan Lerner, Executive Director of New York Common Cause; Susie Shannon, Executive Director of Housing Is A Human Right; Andrea Shapiro, Director of Program and Advocacy for MET Council on Housing; Alan Minsky, Executive Director of Progressive Democrats of America, and Ericka Lesley, elected Santa Monica Rent Board Member.
