Zandile Mbhamali is AHF Eswatini’s longest-serving staff member. Her story is next in our “I Am AHF” series featuring remarkable staff, clients, and partners who are doing what’s right to save lives everyday.
What motivated you to become a part of AHF?
I was a home-based caregiver in my community when I learned about AHF’s mission and vision. I became motivated by the chance to do more and work in a health facility.
What’s it like working for AHF?
I’ve been with AHF Eswatini since its inception on May 15, 2007, and have seen it grow from a small clinic to the largest NGO focused on HIV in Eswatini. Every year, the standards keep improving. I love my work and the people here. It brings me joy when clients and colleagues arrive to find the facility clean, and their compliments truly make my day. Thanks to AHF, I’ve been able to send all three of my children to school, buy land, and even start building my own house.
Do you have any personal experiences or stories that deepen your commitment to HIV/AIDS care?
Working as a home-based caregiver, I supported many people living with HIV who had no one to care for them. Often, they struggled to even reach a facility for medical help or find a meal. These experiences were deeply moving and made me realize how much of a difference I can make by staying committed to helping those living with HIV and others in need of medical care.
What’s the most interesting thing you’re working on right now?
I recently bought land and am in the process of building a home for my family. It’s a dream come true!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
To appreciate every opportunity and always do my best—it will never go unnoticed.
What motivates you to work hard?
I feel so blessed to have this job, a gift from God. Making the environment clean and welcoming for our clinicians to deliver cutting-edge medicine and care keeps me motivated.
What are you passionate about outside of work?
I love singing! I enjoy going to church, fellowshipping with people, and singing for the Lord.
If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
I’d love to meet Michael Weinstein and ask him what inspired him to start this incredible humanitarian work. I’d also thank him for how AHF has positively impacted my life, even though he doesn’t know me personally.
If we asked your friends to describe you, what would they say?
Non-discriminatory, happy, self-caring, and someone who loves good food.
Could you share any memorable moments or stories from your time with AHF?
Being named the most hardworking employee in both 2016 and 2022 is a highlight of my career. I was also honored as the longest-serving employee in 2023 during the unveiling of the new LaMvelase Centre of Excellence—my current workplace. Being part of such a historic moment remains one of my most cherished memories.
