I Am AHF – Ngobya Aloysius: A Journey of Resilience and Hope

In Eblast by Brian Shepherd

Born with HIV in 1984, Ngobya Aloysius is a living testament to the power of resilience, community, and hope. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his aunt, who supported him through a difficult journey. Today, his story shines as an inspiring example of strength and perseverance.

Aloysius updates the client registry at AHF’s health facility.

Aloysius’s health declined in 1997 as he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and later tested positive for HIV. With no access to antiretroviral therapy, Aloysius relied on treatment for opportunistic infections, often wondering if he would survive as many around him succumbed to the virus.

Everything changed in 2003 when AHF Uganda Cares launched services in Masaka, providing a lifeline to Aloysius and many others. Under the care of Dr. Penninah Iutung, now AHF Africa Bureau Chief, Aloysius began treatment in 2004. The transformation was remarkable—within six months, Aloysius regained his strength and began to dream of a future he once thought impossible. Beyond his physical recovery, Aloysius found emotional healing and connection through AHF Uganda Cares’ programs.

Trips to recreational centers and interactions with other young people living with HIV fostered a sense of community that empowered him to adhere to treatment. He became a peer educator through the Positive Youth in Action program, mentoring others and inspiring hope in countless young people who, once like him, felt defined by their diagnosis.

In 2012, Aloysius met his future wife, who was also receiving care at AHF Uganda Cares. Their shared experiences blossomed, and they married in 2013. That same year, they welcomed a healthy baby boy born free from HIV—a joyous milestone made possible through the prevention of mother-to-child transmission services.

Aloysius has since dedicated his life to inspiring others. He has worked as a counselor with Mildmay Uganda and the CDC program at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, using his story to encourage people to start and adhere to treatment. With 40 years of experience living with HIV, he celebrates the advances in treatment that have made his journey easier, including remaining on his first drug regimen.

Passionate about HIV awareness and education, Aloysius spreads a message of hope: “Stay strong, adhere to treatment, and don’t let HIV define you.” He credits AHF Uganda Cares with giving him a second chance at life through accessible treatment and a community of care.

Looking ahead, Aloysius dreams of building his own home, expanding his chicken-rearing business, and using his music to raise HIV awareness. He hopes to share his story across Uganda, inspiring others to overcome their challenges.

His journey with AHF Uganda Cares is a powerful reminder that resilience, love, and support can transform life’s darkest moments into a legacy of hope for others. “Living positively with HIV is a miracle,” said Aloysius. “I dedicate this milestone to all who need hope. If I could go this far, so can they.”
