AHF’s Transgender Group Urges LGBTQI Solidarity to Oppose White House Action
LOS ANGELES (July 26) – In response to President Trump declaring this morning, via Twitter, that he would seek to overturn Obama-era policies regarding the military service of transgender and gender non-conforming Americans, FLUX, AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s (AHF) transgender advocacy group, issued the following statement:
“Despite the daily struggles facing their community, trans and gender non-conforming Americans show bravery every time they go out into a world that doesn’t fully recognize them. If these Americans make the brave decision to enlist and defend their country, we believe there should be no barriers to prevent their right to serve openly, proudly, and without fear. We would like to urge all members and allies of the LGBTQI community to stand together against the regression of transgender progress and not let it be reduced to simply a part of distraction politics intended to rally a political base.”
The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQI civil rights organization, estimates that there are at least 15,000 transgender individuals currently serving openly in the United States military.
