AHF Brings Services to the Community in a Zambian Township

In Global, Zambia by AHF

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) officially opened Makhululu AHF clinic in Kabwe, Zambia on Oct. 21, 2016.

Makhululu compound is one of the largest townships in Africa with a population of more than 60,000. Many of its residents struggle to make ends meet due to high poverty levels and one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in Zambia.

During the official opening of the health center, AHF Medical Director, Brigadier General Dr. Lawson Simapuka said that the opening of the health centre will provide access to HIV testing, treatment and care facilities for the people of Makhululu compound.

He pointed out that the clinic would contribute to increasing access to HIV health service delivery. Dr. Simapuka also said that it was AHF’s desire to expand its reach across the country.

The guest of honour at the ceremony was Kabwe’s Executive Mayor, Mr. Prince Chileshe. In a speech read on his behalf by Makhululu counsellor Victor Kolala, he commended AHF for the good job it is doing in helping curb and mitigate the impact of HIV in Zambia. He said the opening of the AHF clinic was a timely and perfect gift to the people of Makhululu and Kabwe as a whole.

Mr. Chileshe also urged the people of Makhululu to make use of the facility, which he said has been brought to their door step. He called upon every person to take an HIV test, saying that taking the test was the first step to being able to access HIV treatment and care.

He commended AHF for partnering with the government of Zambia to contribute to the management of HIV in the country.

Residents of Makhululu who attended the event expressed joy at the opening of the clinic and the availability of health services near them. Speaking on behalf of the local community members, Hellen Musonda said the residents are happy to have a place near them to access services free of charge. She said it will give them more time to work and earn a living because they will save time and money by not having to travel to access services in far flung areas.

The event was preceded by a march from Kabwe town Centre to the AHF clinic in Makhululu area. The mayor’s representative flagged off the march.
