AHF Speaks at the UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on AIDS

The United Nations (UN) Member States adopted a new “Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS” at the General Assembly High Level Meeting (HLM) on AIDS, which took place in New York the week of June 6.

AHF delegates attending the HLM noted that while overall the Declaration is a step in the right direction, it remains to be seen whether the Member States will contribute sufficient funding in the coming years to fulfill their commitments on ending AIDS. Currently the shortfall in global AIDS funding is estimated at $6 billion to $10 billion per year.

Seven members of AHF’s advocacy and policy team attended the HLM plenary sessions and nearly 30 side meetings and events. In the UN sessions, AHF delegates repeatedly voiced their alarm about the collapse of global AIDS funding, lack of access to affordable generic medicines due to trade restrictions, and the harmful impact of the World Bank middle-income country status on countries affected by the AIDS epidemic.

Advocacy on these important issues will continue as part of the “Keep the Promise” Campaign in Durban, South Africa during the 2016 International AIDS Conference and beyond.
