“I’m Trans” Kicks off in Brazil

In Brazil, Global by AHF

Over 250 attendees, many of them people of transgender experience, filled a stately hall in São Paulo, Brazil on March 17 to celebrate the launch of “I’m Trans,” the new awareness-raising campaign co-organized by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF).

Due in large part to trans-phobia and stigma, Brazil has a concentrated HIV epidemic that disproportionately affects the country’s transgender community. Occasionally, negative attitudes toward transgender people escalate into violence. As a result, fear and social isolation keep many transgender people from seeking HIV treatment and prevention services. With the “I’m Trans” campaign, AHF Brazil and its partners hope to change that.

In addition to members of the transgender community, campaign launch attendees included the São Paulo State Secretary for Human Rights, representatives from municipal and state AIDS programs, and representatives from the Ministry of Health. The event was co-hosted by AHF Brazil’s Country Program Manager, Cristina Raposo.
