World Bank Protest in Peru

In Peru by AHF

On the heels of the World Bank protest in Washington, DC, over 100 people from AHF and partner organizations staged two demonstrations in Lima, Peru on Oct. 7 during the Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the World Bank Group.

The demonstrators—wielding picket signs and globe-shaped balloons—called on World Bank President Dr. Jim Yong Kim to change how the institution classifies countries by their income level. Of particular concern is the contradictory meaning of the Middle Income Country (MIC) designation, which is above the Low Income (LIC) designation, yet encompasses 75% of the world’s poor.

A group of AHF staffers personally handed Dr. Kim a “Raise the MIC” flyer and a campaign coffee cup, which signifies the meager income of $2.86 per day that the World Bank considers the dividing line between LIC and MIC designations, at the press conference during the meeting.

AHF has vowed to pursue the “Raise the MIC” campaign until the World Bank takes action and brings the MIC designation in line with the economic realities on the ground.
