Donate Style to OTC & Go to Fashion Week!

In News by AHF

AIDS Healthcare Foundation has launched a style contest, Donate Style, for New York City designers, stylists, and fashion students via Instagram – the entrant who donates the best-styled look to the Brooklyn Out of the Closet Thrift Store will win celebrity treatment at the Tumbler & Tipsy fashion show at Style 360 Fashion Week!

NEW YORK CITY (August 27, 2013) – AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the largest AIDS organization in the United States, has partnered with designer Michael Kuluva of the eclectic Tumbler & Tipsy clothing line to reinvigorate the connection between fashion and philanthropy for a new generation of young stylists.

Now through September 9, New York City-based designers, stylists, and fashion students are invited to create a multiple-piece look, take it to Brooklyn’s Out of the Closet Thrift Store – the New York location of a nationwide AHF vintage store collection where 96 cents of every dollar earned benefits AIDS treatment, testing, and advocacy in 28 countries worldwide – and upon donation of the look the stylist will be entered to win front row seats to the Tumbler & Tipsy fashion show at Style 360 Fashion Week through AHF’s Donate Style contest.

The Brooklyn Out of the Closet Thrift Store is the newest location for the unique thrift store where people can shop for a good cause and also have access to free HIV testing inside the store. The Brooklyn store, located at 475 Atlantic Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn, is the 22nd Out of the Closet location in the United States, joining stores in California, Florida, and Ohio. There is also one Out of the Closet location outside of the United States, located in Amsterdam.

To enter Donate Style to win seats at New York’s Style 360 Fashion Week Tumbler & Tipsy show, entrants must:

  • Put together a complete fashion look, either of their own design or out of their own closets
  • Bring the completed look to the Brooklyn Out of the Closet, where they will have the opportunity to dress a mannequin in their look and take a photograph on a smart phone
  • Post that photograph on the photo-sharing application Instagram with a geo-tagged “check in” at the Brooklyn store and the tag #OTCNYFashion
  • Donate the full look to the thrift store to be sold after the winner of the contest is announced, with the proceeds earned from the sales benefitting the fight against HIV and AIDS

During a celebrity-studded in-store media event on September 10, just before the September 12 Tumbler & Tipsy fashion show, the top looks will be presented and a winner will be announced. The contest and media event will be replicated for West Coast entrants to mark Los Angeles Fashion Week later this year.

“The Brooklyn Out of the Closet is located near some of the nation’s top fashion schools, and in the fashion capital of the world, New York City,” said Michael Camacho, the New York Regional Manager for AHF. “We’re very excited to see what these talented young minds can produce, and we’re sure they are eager to see those looks contribute to fighting HIV/AIDS all around the world.”
