AHF Cambodia Cares Kicks off World AIDS Day Testing Campaign

In Cambodia, Global by AHF

AHF Cambodia Cares’ World AIDS Day HIV testing campaign kicked off on November 9, 2011, coinciding with a major Cambodian national holiday known as the Water Festival.  The campaign will continue until World AIDS Day, December 1st.

The first day of the campaign featured a free HIV testing event in Phnom Penh Cambodia, in which AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) reached more than 9,000 people through outreach activities and 479 people were referred and tested.  Six people tested HIV positive and were immediately linked to treatment and care.

AHF Cambodia Cares has aimed its testing efforts at boat racers and their families, as well as to the general population that come from other provinces to enjoy the Water Festival.

The testing locations are varied and include schools, health centers, and a Buddhist temple, which had never been a place for testing previously. These locations are identified as near to markets, coffee shops, restaurants, and other entertainment establishments.

AHF Cambodia Cares works closely in partnership with five Municipalities and Provincial Health Departments, as well as with the men have sex with men (MSM) network, CPN+ and seven NGO (non-governmental organization) partners who are currently working with drug users, entertainment workers, community and home-based care, as well as self-help groups for people living with HIV/AIDS.
