Looking For HIV Testing in South Africa? Find HIV Center

AHF South Africa has been operational in South Africa since 2002 when it established its first global clinic (Ithembalabantu People’s Hope Clinic) in Umlazi, South Africa. AHF South Africa collaborates with the Department of Health and Local Government in South Africa via the provincial governments in KwaZulu Natal, Eastern Cape and Gauteng to support the delivery of quality comprehensive HIV, STI and TB (HAST) services.

AHF continues to lend its support to the government’s efforts to ensure models of service delivery for HAST services, standards of care and the strategic direction for implementation of these services are embraced. AHF currently supports 49 other facilities with HAST services in the 3 provinces, in the form of direct service delivery at the supported sites, training and capacity building, mentoring, monitoring and evaluation, and provision of other resources such as equipment and infrastructure.

South Africa carries the world’s heaviest HIV/AIDS burden with 8.2 million people living with HIV* and prevalence rates lingering at 13.7% of the population. For adults aged 15–49 years, an estimated 19,5% of the population is HIV positive.

The most recent Human Science Research Council Prevalence, Incidence, Behavior and Communication study, released in July 2018 estimated that there were 222,000* new HIV cases and over 115,000* AIDS-related deaths last year alone, with TB ranked as the leading cause of death in the country.

Young women and girls are disproportionately affected by HIV in South Africa with HIV prevalence among 20 – 24-year-old is three times higher among females (15.6%) than males (4.8%). Therefore, AHF South Africa runs the Girls ACT and Young People’s Programmes, special programme focusing on empowering youth with information about sexual and reproductive health and rights, substance abuse, unplanned pregnancy, and gender-based violence.

The Girls ACT programme distributes sanitary pads and hygiene packs, builds self-esteem, and encourages girls to stay in school; and the Young People’s Program offers combination prevention services to both young boys and girls, distributes hygiene packs and promotes positive masculinity, refers boys for voluntary medical male circumcision and encourages condom use.
