In a meeting last Friday with officials from the International AIDS Society (IAS), a global delegation from AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the largest AIDS group in the US which currently provides medical care to more than 98,000 individuals in 21 countries worldwide in the US, Africa, Latin America/Caribbean and Asia, requested that the 2012 XIX International AIDS Conference take place in the United States, ending more than fifteen years of being excluded due to the United States’ ban on HIV-positive travelers entering the country or applying for residency. AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) the US’ largest non-profit HIV/AIDS organization which currently provides medical care and/or services to more than 98,000 individuals in 21 countries worldwide in the US, Africa, Latin America/Caribbean and Asia, today lauded the respected British medical journal, ‘The Lancet,’ for its strongly-worded editorial criticizing Pope Benedict XVI for his public remarks early last week suggesting that condoms are fueling the spread of AIDS in Africa. In remarks to reporters accompanying the Pontiff on his first Papal visit to Africa, Pope Benedict XVI told reporters, that AIDS “…is a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, and that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems." Thanks to the more than 2,000 walkers, 175 teams, 400 volunteers, numerous virtual walkers, team captains, fundraisers, donors and sponsors, the 6.2-mile, 2-hour walk was a resounding success helping not only to support HIV/AIDS testing, prevention, education, treatment and support services, but also to raise awareness that nearly 125,000 Floridians are living with HIV/AIDS.
