New SF HIV Clinic Acts as Store Too
By: Holly Quan, KCBS Radio
San Francisco, CA - October 1, 2009
A unique HIV clinic opened in San Francisco's Castro District Wednesday that houses medical treatment, a pharmacy and thrift store all under one roof.
It's meant to be a one stop shopping center for whatever you are looking for, all found at the new Out of the Closet thrift store at Church and Duboce.
Adam Ouderkirk, regional director for the AIDS Health Care Foundation said the store also has whatever patients or shoppers are looking for.
"So basically, people who are spending money in the store are supporting the services that are going on right next door, which is very exciting," said Ouderkirk. "We do HIV health care, HIV testing, we have HIV specialists on our pharmacy staff, but it's open to anyone."
And if you've ever sat waiting in a doctor's office thinking "I could be shopping instead," now you can.
"You can come in for your doctor's visit and while you're waiting, come out and shop a little bit and then go over to get your prescription filled and while you're waiting for that, shop a little more and then go on your way," Ouderkirk said.
