Paul DenOuden, MD

Internist - Medical Director
Westside HCC

Paul W. DenOuden, MD is the Medical Director of the Westside Healthcare Center and a board-certified internist, as well as an AAHIVM-certified HIV specialist.  He also serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and teaches third year medical students in the Doctoring program.

Dr. DenOuden is interested in HIV/AIDS and anti-retroviral therapy (ART) research and has become a pioneer in the development of international HIV/AIDS medical programs.  He is active in many clinical trials here in the AHF Research department both as an Early Acces Program investigator, as well as a sub-investigator and Principal Investigator on various studies. He has also been principal in conducting medical training in the provision of ART and in developing and establishing HIV/AIDS clinics in Uganda, Honduras, Ukraine, Mexico, and India. During medical school at UCLA, he received a Pediatric AIDS Foundation Research Grant for research on immunologic alterations in neonates born to HIV-positive mothers. He has helped author medical chapters in the AAHIVM 'Fundamentals of HIV Medicine' book  and the AHF HIV Medics guide.

Before becoming an HIV/AIDS physician, Dr. DenOuden has always been involved in the HIV/AIDS cause as a volunteer from college forward.  He has volunteered as both a cyclist in the California AIDS Ride, completed in 1997, and as a volunteer physician on the ride in 2000. He trained as an emotional support counselor at the AIDS Services Foundation, Orange County.  He has also assisted at the Salvation Army as a free clinic volunteer and trained as an HIV pre-post test counselor.  He volunteered in the Students Teaching AIDS to Students (DOC/STATS) program at UCLA in medical school, and participated on health clinic trips to Mexico through the Flying Samaritans Club at the University of California, Irvine (UCI).  

Dr. DenOuden received his medical degree from the UCLA School of Medicine and his bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine.  He completed his internship and residency at UCLA before becoming an HIV fellow at AIDS Healthcare Foundation.  Dr. DenOuden is conversant in Spanish.
