The Epidemic

About 90% of new HIV infections in Eastern Europe and Central Asia happen in Russia or Ukraine. This region is the only one where HIV prevalence clearly remains on the rise, and where the number of people living with HIV has almost tripled since 2000. In 2009, only 10% of Ukrainians who needed antiretroviral therapy were receiving it.

AHF in Ukraine

Responding to the low level of access to treatment in the country, AHF opened its first ART clinic in Ukraine in 2009, on the premises of the Odessa Oblast Hospital. Odessa is seaport city with one of the highest percentages of HIV positive people in the country.

Today AHF’s HIV treatment locations include two outpatient ART sites in Kyiv and 18 decentralized ART sites in smaller cities. We also offer provider-initiated HIV counseling and testing through six sites in Kyiv and the surrounding oblast, testing patients at clinics that provide tuberculosis treatment and prevention services, services for drug users, family services and STD treatment.

We also do advocacy to expand access to affordable condoms, free HIV testing and ART throughout Ukraine. In 2010, over 18,000 people got tested as part of our rapid testing initiative.
