The Epidemic
About 90% of new HIV infections in Eastern Europe and Central Asia happen in Ukraine or Russia. Lack of services for injecting drug users, stigma surrounding men having sex with men, and limited access to affordable condoms and HIV testing have presented challenges to controlling the HIV epidemic. In 2009, as little as 20% of those in need of ART were receiving it.
AHF in Russia
AHF has been working with local partners in Russia since 2010. We focus on improving access to ART and conducting free, rapid HIV testing in and around the major metropolitan areas of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg.
In 2010, AHF and Dance4Life staged a flash mob in the center of St. Petersburg promoting condom use to prevent the spread of HIV. In Yekaterinburg, AHF regularly conducts mobile HIV testing outreach in collaboration with the regional AIDS center.
