The Disease
While a relatively low percentage of Viet Nam’s population is HIV positive, the prevalence of HIV among some groups is much higher. 18.4% of injecting drug users in Viet Nam have HIV. Men who have sex with men and sex workers also face elevated risk.
AHF in Viet Nam
In 2007, AHF inaugurated its first ART clinic in Viet Nam in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Hai Phong AIDS Control Center and Thuy Nguyen District Hospital. AHF partnered with Viet Nam Administration on HIV/AIDS Control and Quang Ninh Provincial AIDS Center a year later to open a second clinic, in Quang Ninh Province. Since then AHF has opened two more ART sites, in Thai Binh and Bac Giang.
AHF provides medical care to over a thousand clients, the majority of them receiving free ART. We also promote condom use and conduct outreach events offering free, rapid HIV testing. In January 2010, as part of a groundbreaking, week-long tour in the Thuy Nguyen District, AHF Vietnam tested 2,037 people for HIV and referred the 23 who were positive to treatment.
