The Epidemic

The majority of people living with HIV in Nepal don’t know it. As of 2009, only 14,320 people were registered as positive – less than a quarter of those estimated to have the virus. Consequently, treatment levels are low, with only 11% of those in need of ART receiving it.

AHF in Nepal

World AIDS Day Test & Treat event in Madi a remote part of Chitwan, Nepal

AHF Nepal works in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Population and the National Centre for AIDS and STD Control. Together, we established the ART Center of Excellence at the Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital in Teku, Kathmandu, which was dedicated in November of 2008 and became operational in July of 2009.

Through our healthcare center and events, we provide medical services to thousands of clients, nearly half of whom are on ART. We also lead advocacy efforts to reduce the stigma of HIV and encourage prevention. As a co-sponsor of the Cricket for AIDS event in 2010, we helped distribute more than 42,000 condoms and 3,400 informational pamphlets on safer sex. We also tested 289 people for HIV.
