In 2006, AHF China Cares established its first program in Linfen, China and has since grown to a total of five sites across the country. AHF China Cares has focused on building a cooperative network of government agencies, hospitals, and local and international organizations to help test and treat people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). In 2008, the China Preventative Medicine Association (CPMA) signed an agreement with AHF to assist in financial management and program development of AHF China Cares.
Since 2006, AHF has focused on providing greater access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in China in three ways: by training doctors and nurses in ART services, providing complimentary medicine to treat and control opportunistic infections (OI) among low-income populations, and by forming community-based partnerships to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).
AHF has made great efforts to engage established agencies like the Ministry of Health, National Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and Control(NCAIDS), and local and national centers for disease control. AHF collaborates with the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Beijing each year to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS on World AIDS Day.
Further, AHF has conducted pilot programs to determine the link between HIV diagnoses and early ART services
