Guyana has one of the highest prevalence rates of HIV infection in Latin America and the Caribbean, second only to Haiti. The adult prevalence is in the range of 0.8% to 7.7%, and WHO/UNAIDS estimate that approximately 15 000 to 20 000 adults and children were infected by the virus at the end of 2004. The epidemic has spread beyond the specific high-risk groups into the general population. Since 1987 when the first AIDS cases were reported, the epidemic has been growing progressively, with a cumulative 4502 AIDS cases reported at the end of the third quarter of 2004. The primary mode of transmission is heterosexual.
