The Epidemic
About 1 million people in Ethiopia are living with HIV. In 2007, the Federal HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office launched the Millennium AIDS Campaign, broadly encouraging HIV testing in hope of getting more people onto ART and bringing the epidemic under control. Since then, prevalence among adults has leveled off at 2-5%, depending on region.
AHF in Ethiopia
AHF partners with the Worldwide Orphans Foundation (WWO) to offer comprehensive HIV services to clients living below the global poverty line – both children and adults. We work together to keep parents healthy and children cared for. The WWO-AHF Family Health Center in Addis Ababa offers HIV testing, safer sex education and antiretroviral treatment to 2,000 people, with new clients enrolling every month.
Our Ethiopia program is a model for effectively reaching highly-populated areas. The health center has expanded to a semipermanent location in a major transportation hub, where clients can drop in for services along their regular travel routes. We also perform outreach, bringing HIV testing and counseling throughout the country.
