In the fight against AIDS, every life lost is a tragedy; every life saved is a triumph.
It’s been 10 years since lifesaving anti-retroviral therapy (ART) was first introduced in the Western world, yet more than 80 percent of those living with HIV/AIDS in the world still have little or no access to treatment.
AHF is dedicated to saving lives by providing ART to those who need it the most. As the U.S.’s largest AIDS non-profit organization, AHF celebrates the victory of life over death with AfricAlive: Portraits of Success. This series of beautiful, life-size photographic images of AHF clients taken in Uganda and South Africa is a call to action and proof that TREATMENT = LIFE.
The AfricaAlive exhibit features 35 clients of AHF clinics in South Africa and Uganda who have successfully regained their health and strength on free ART. They are among the fortunate few in the world that have access to these medications and we honor their courage and commitment in overcoming extreme hardships in their fight to stay alive. The magnificent photographic portraits were taken by globally recognized photographer Dorit Thies.
The AfricAlive exhibit features both vibrant portraits and brief biographical sketches, which relate in the subject’s own words, how AIDS has impacted their family and how access to treatment has changed their lives.
AHF created AfricAlive to raise awareness about the unacceptable lack of access to ART worldwide, as well as raise funds to support its Africa-based free ART clinics. Five hundred limited edition portrait books, handmade of banana leaves in Uganda and signed by the photographer, will be available for purchase at the exhibit. All exhibit proceeds will support life-sustaining care and treatment to those in desperate need.
