Fred Muwanga, MD
Bureau Chief, Southern Africa
Fred Tusuubira Muwanga, MD is the Southern Africa Bureau Chief for AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF). He is a medical doctor with more than 14 years experience in international public health programming and HIV/AIDS clinical service in sub-Saharan Africa. As Southern Africa Bureau Chief, Dr. Muwanga oversees the operations of AHF’s highly successful programs in South Africa, Swaziland and Zambia. Additionally, Dr. Muwanga brings to his role as Bureau Chief postgraduate training in public health, epidemiology, HIV/AIDS programming and healthcare and systems management.
Prior to his work with AHF, Dr. Muwanga was Director of South-to-South partnership for family focused HIV/AIDS care and treatment at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. He also held a senior level professional position as an HIV/AIDS Specialist at USAID/Uganda for three years and served as Regional Manager for OXFAM Great Britain from July 2003 to February 2005.
Dr. Muwanga received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Makerere University, Uganda in 1990. He completed a Fellowship in Applied Epidemiology in December 2001 at the Centers for Disease Control and Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and another Fellowship in HIV/AIDS Care and Management in March 2003 at Baylor College of Medicine/Baylor Pediatric AIDS Initiative in Houston, Texas. He also holds a Master of Science in Healthcare and Systems Management from the University of Luton, United Kingdom (2001) and a Master of Public Health from the Witwatersrand School of Public Health in South Africa (2005).
Dr. Muwanga has collaborated with international organizations and universities in research, design and implementation of HIV/AIDS and infectious disease control programs. He is a sought after researcher and consultant and has presented his findings on HIV/AIDS to UNDP/UNAIDS and WESTAT/National Institute of Health on several occasions. He has also published a number of articles on the impact of HIV/AIDS on Swaziland and its economy.
